• How long should one typically wait after applying for a typical sales Assistant Job at some where such as Walmart, Best Buy, etc. I sent application to a number of retail stores about 5 days ago, a couple were a week ago and as of yet have heard nothing back.

Is it safe to assume that if a week has passed my application has probably be thrown out?

  • Assuming that you didn't introduce yourself, then I'd recommend calling the locations and asking to speak to the hiring manager or interviewer. Explain that you dropped off an application on a certain date, and that you are very interested in working for them. Ask them when interviews are being held, and what you need to do to be considered. You shouldn't call more than once per week, otherwise they may think you're overly anxious.

As a rule of thumb: Whenever you apply ask to hand the application to the manager (or assistant manager if the manager is not there), and introduce yourself. At the point of introduction ask the manager his/her timing for interviews and then follow up (call them) at that halfway point from the time you gave your application and the time of the interviews. Remind them that you met them and that you are very interested in the opportunity. If you still don't get called in for an interview, then I wouldn't pursue it. You don't want to be perceived as a stalker!

    Good luck!
