• I am planning on buying an amplifier so that i can plug in my tv, dvd player and ps3 and have them all on the surround sound. If i buy an amplifier which has an output of say 500watts, when i come to buying speakers(7.1) does there combined output of them have to be greater than 500 watts?

  • Try a bit of reading on these sites.

  • Another major factor in home stereo speakers is ohm rating, some receivers require matched ohm ratings or it may damage your system.
Long story short just buy a box set. And remember you get what you pay for. Also plan ahead for technology, if you think you may get an HDTV get a Receiver with HDMI connections. Know how much your willing to spend before you go to the store, and buy the machine that fits into that budget with the most capabilities.

  • 5.1, 6.1, 7.1 amps will have a power rating "per channel", for instance 50W times 5, plus 50 watts for the sub-woofer, unless it is self-powered.
Most speakers are capable of 50w each.
My recommendation would be that you buy a Theater System in a box.
Before you buy separate components you have a lot to learn, if you don't do that, chances are that you will purchase speakers that do match the amp.
